Optimus Gen 3 Release Date: What Tesla Has (and Hasn't) Shown + a Fan-Made Parody Game
Published
Looking for the Optimus Gen 3 release date? Tesla has not announced one. On October 21, 2026, Tesla said Optimus production had started in Fremont — but starting production is not the same as unveiling Gen 3. As of October 26, Gen 3 still had no public reveal date, and Musk pointed to deliveries to outside companies around the end of 2027.
The one-line answers
- Gen 3 reveal / release date: not announced. Humanoids Daily’s October 26 overview says Gen 3 is in development and has no public reveal date (Humanoids Daily, Oct 26).
- Production: Tesla’s Q3 2026 update says “Optimus production began in Fremont on our high-volume lines” and lists California Optimus as “Early Ramp” (Tesla Q3 2026 Update; TechCrunch).
- Deliveries to outside companies: Musk expects them around the end of 2027 — a target, not a schedule (call transcript, Motley Fool; CNBC, Oct 21).
What Tesla has said about Gen 3 so far
Its Q4 2025 update, released January 28, 2026, said: “In Q1 of this year, we plan to unveil the Gen 3 version of Optimus,” with “major upgrades from version 2.5, including our latest hand design,” and called Gen 3 “our first design meant for mass production” (Tesla Q4 2025 Update).
That Q1 target came and went. On March 31, Humanoids Daily reported that Tesla had missed its own deadline; Musk responded on X that “Optimus 3 is walking around” but needed “finishing touches before it’s ready to be shown” (Humanoids Daily, Mar 31). As of October 26, Tesla still has not shown it, and no replacement date has been published (Humanoids Daily, Oct 26).
Production started ≠ Gen 3 unveiled
In its Q3 2026 update, Tesla wrote: “The bots coming off this line are the first production-quality bots that we have manufactured.” It adds that Tesla will “continue to iterate on the hardware and manufacturing process” (Tesla Q3 2026 Update). On the call, Musk called it “early production” and said the ramp would be slow and “somewhat bumpy” (TechCrunch).
What Tesla did not do matters just as much. The Verge notes Tesla did not disclose how many robots it has produced, what tasks they can perform autonomously, or how often they finish tasks without human help (The Verge).
Are the Fremont robots Gen 3? Tesla has not said so. The Information reported, via Humanoids Daily, that robots built in Fremont in August were labeled “V3,” and that its sources said they were not the exact version Tesla intends to sell (Humanoids Daily, Oct 26). That is a secondhand report; Tesla has not confirmed it, so treat it as unconfirmed.
What is still unfinished
Musk listed the open problems on the call (call transcript, Motley Fool; The Verge; TechCrunch):
- Hands: “we’re building robots that do not have perfected hands.”
- Durability: the robot “can’t, like, wear out after a month.”
- AI: “there’s still quite a lot of work to do with regard to the AI and the robot for it to be truly useful for open-ended tasks” (CNBC, Oct 21).
- Timing: Musk said he expects these issues to be “solved around the end of next year,” adding, “that’s the time to expect when we’re delivering Optimus to companies outside of Tesla” (call transcript, Motley Fool).
- New chip: Musk hopes to put Tesla’s AI5 chip into Optimus around April 2027 (The Verge).
- Volume: reaching 20,000 robots a week will take “at least a year, maybe a little longer” (call transcript, Motley Fool; The Verge).
When could Gen 3 actually be shown?
Two dates are worth watching:
- A new video. Musk said Tesla “may be ready to release like an Optimus video in a month or so” (call transcript, Motley Fool); The Verge describes the window as a month or two (The Verge). A video is not a launch event.
- December 3, 2026. Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. Central Time. The board’s October 19 letter mentions the Fremont Optimus line but gives no delivery date, and its uncaptioned Optimus image appears to match the earlier Gen 2.5 design — so it should not be read as a Gen 3 reveal (Humanoids Daily, Oct 19).
Humanoids Daily’s own estimate (theirs, not Tesla’s) is a partial look by the end of 2026 and a full reveal in the first half of 2027 (Humanoids Daily, Oct 26).
What about price?
Tesla has not announced a retail price for Optimus Gen 3. The Q3 2026 update’s Optimus section gives no price (Tesla Q3 2026 Update), and none of the October coverage linked here reports one. The only figure on record is a long-term goal Musk stated: at Tesla’s “We, Robot” event in October 2024, he said Optimus would eventually cost between $20,000 and $30,000 (CNBC, Oct 2024; Business Insider, Oct 2024). That is a long-term prediction, not a price list or a Gen 3 announcement.
